Do you know that manatees possess vocal chords which give them the ability to speak like humans, but don't do so because they have no ears with which to hear the sound.
Manatees are large, fully aquatic, mostly herbivores Marine mammals sometimes known as sea cows.
Manatees are typically found in shallow coastal areas and rivers where they feed on sea grass, mangrove leaves, and algae. These herbivores munch on food for almost half the day, eating ten percent of their body weight in plant mass every day. With weights of up to 1,200 pounds, that is a whole lot of greenery.
West Indian ( Trichechus manatus ) and West African (T. senegalensis ) manatees spend their lives on the cusp between salty and fresh water. They are able to maintain the correct balance in their bodies through an internal regulation system that works with the kidney to make sure salt concentrations never get too high. It is believed that West Indian manatees require some access to freshwater (PDF) in order to stay hydrated, but they are able to easily move between the two ecosystems.
Manatee brains are smooth (compared to our own that have the familiar ins and outs of cortical folds) and the ratio of their brain to their body size is the lowest of any mammal . They may not be as clever as dolphins, but manatees can learn basic tasks, are extremely sensitive to touch and can differentiate colors.

10 Sets Of Students You Would Have Met At The University in Nigeria
22:55 Faith Dan 0 CommentsIf you have ever been a student at a university in Nigeria, then you would understand that there are different groups of students.
While people outside the walls of the university may see everyone in the school as students, the insiders know the difference and are always able to place students in the group they belong to. We need not tell you that not all students are active students in the university.
Some of them are only in school because people expect them to be. This is one of the reasons why elderly ones advice their wards by telling them to pass through school and allow school to pass through them.
That being said, find the different sets of people you are most likely to meet in a university:
1. The party goers
People like these are always present in every university. As a matter of fact, they are the most popular set of students as people are always talking about them.
You can be sure that they would be at a party even when they do not go to school regularly. They cannot afford to miss a party and give more importance to it. These are the people you see wearing branded shirts that promote parties.
2. The fashionistas
The thing synonymous to the people in this group is that they love clothes. They would spend every cent they have on clothes and bother themselves about looking good always.
The trending clothes and style would first be seen on them and they would rock a style ahead of every other student in school. They may not be leading in their class but you can be sure you can never beat them when it comes to fashion.
3. The bookworms
People in this set are too studious; all they want to do is read and read. They do not go out, attend parties or have any form of social life. They would read even when there is no test and the exam is not in view.
They do not bother themselves about fashion and only wear whatever they have. Their lifestyle is very simple.
4. The library goers
This set of people love going to the library; that is what they do every day. If they are not in the class or in the hostel, you can be sure you will find them in the library. They want to read ahead of the class and in some cases, they do this to intimidate other students.
5. The student right activists
Students like these are passionate about the affairs of the school and are active members of the student union government. They concern themselves with the affairs of the other students in the school and express their opinions through the association.
They are people who are interested in politics and would always contest for one position or the other even at the faculty level.
6. The mobile kiosks
These groups of students are concerned about trade and business. They sell different wares while being students and have everything you need.
They sell recharge cards, snacks, books and other things on the go. They move around with the goods they sell and people know them as a result of that. Some of them end up being traders and business women after graduating from the university.
7. The talkative
Students in this set are known to talk a lot. They would always be seen talking in the school as their gist has no end. Other students avoid sitting with them because they distract them from reading and concentrating in class. Most of the people in this group find time to read and then cool off by talking and distracting others.
8. The fellowship brothers
People in this group are so passionate about religion. They act like God is only for them and go extra mile to get things done in the religious centres.
They get to church earlier than the pastors and never miss any fellowship. Every other person who does not conform to their way of life is thought to be a devil while they are the holy ones.
9. The ‘dubbers’
Students that are found in the group have necks that have been adapted for cheat*ng. They know all the scopes one could deploy when it comes to cheat*ng. They would rather spend their time forming bond than reading.
They expect the other students to teach them during the exams and even spell the answers to them.
10. The borrowers
Students in this group would borrow everything including underwear. They always admire everything owned by other people; they borrow clothes, shoes and pants.
When you meet students like these in the university, they may look attractive and all. If you take your time to find out things about them, you would be shocked to know everything they have on is borrowed

Top 12 Study Skills for Exam Success
01:38 Faith Dan 0 CommentsThe best way to get high grades on an exam is to consider the entire length of your course as a pre-exam, preparation period. Because courses can last a few months to a whole year, you may find it difficult to make the connection between your daily homework, periodic assignments, and your final exam. To get high marks, start by recognizing that all academic work done through the semester, summer, or school year is exam studying.
The strategies below can help you keep pace throughout the year. They will ensure exam success as well as mastery of the subject.
1. Set your goal: Read the course overview to understand what the course will cover and how it will be scored. Identify your goal in concrete terms and put it in writing to strengthen your resolve.
2. Manage your time: Time management skills can help you take control of your study workload, achieve more, and stress out less. There are many ways to make time work with you, instead of against you. Purchase an academic diary or study planner. Buy one which provides a week-at-a-glance or a month-at-a-glance view, so you can get a holistic view of the time you have available. Find out assignment due dates and quiz/test/exam dates and mark them in your study planner in advance.
This way you’ll be able to avoid social commitments during pre-exam periods. Minimize distractions and keep your priorities straight. Focus on your goal of getting the highest marks possible. Schedule social activities around your study schedule and not vice-versa! Remember this is not only an academic challenge, it’s your job in life right now. Make it a successful and enjoyable year!
3. Identify your learning style: Take a learning style assessment test and find out if you are a visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learner. This self-knowledge can help you make more effective use of your time. Remember, your learning style may be quite different from that of family members and friends. Adapting your study method to suit your own natural style will enable you to produce powerful results in less time.
4. Develop a study plan: For each course, figure out how much time you will need to spend outside of class, in order to keep up and in order to do well. Plan a study schedule that allows you to stay in control of the academic workload.
5. Keep up with reading: Particularly in college or university, staying up-to-date in terms of your reading is critical to your success. When you attend a lecture without having completed the required reading, you lose a valuable opportunity to add to your understanding.
6. Develop effective note-taking techniques: A variety of note-taking styles can help you record key information and see the bigger picture in terms of subject matter. Good note-taking strategies can help you make the most of the time spent reading from textbooks and attending classes.
7. Attend classes regularly: Be an active learner. Attend lectures regularly and participate whenever possible. The interaction will help you to remember more than if you sit passively in class, dreaming of other things.
8. Create mind maps: Mind maps are graphic organizers, developed by Tony Buzan, which can help you summarize vital information from lectures and textbooks. Each topic can be condensed onto a page; each chapter can be encapsulated onto a larger map. Eventually, you can develop a mind map to review the key sections of each course and get a broad view of how each topic relates to the others. Then, to review before an exam, see if you can reconstruct the map. In this way, you can test yourself to see if you can recall key terms, factors, reasons and examples.
9. Surround yourself with learning: Create a 24-hour learning environment by putting up review charts and points where you can see them daily – on mirrors, doors, fridge, bathroom, television, or bedside table. If possible, purchase a white board and dry erase markers, so you can test your recall by reproducing the mind maps. Use bright-colored markers, include images to trigger your memory and most of all, have fun.
10. Work with concentration: It’s in your interest! One hour of concentrated study is worth several hours of distracted study. If you learn how to work with concentration, you will achieve more than 95% of the population. This critical skill enables you to do more in less time and is one of the distinguishing features of super achievers around the world.
11. Apply memory techniques: Take the time to learn different memory techniques and practice applying them in a variety of academic and professional contexts. Understand the basic memory principles upon which your brain works and learn some tips for improving your memory. The more you exercise your memory muscle, the stronger it will be and the more confidence you will have in your ability to recall information when you need it most.
12. Use all your intelligences: Are you aware of the concept of multiple intelligences? Do you know it doesn’t matter how smart you are but rather how you are smart? This concept was introduced by Howard Gardiner of Harvard University. It explains the number of different ways in which a human can have intelligence and how this self-knowledge can help us live, work, and study more efficiently.

Answers: 1-F, 2-F, 3-T, 4-F, 5-F, 6-F, 7-T, 8-T
Did you know that what you eat and drink can affect your exam performance? What is the best diet to follow on exam day? Can food and drink affect your test scores? In our increasingly health-conscious world, parents and students are seeking the answers to these important questions. We all hope that healthy pre-exam nutrition will give us an added edge during exam time, and in fact, it can.
A long exam is like a mental marathon in which endurance is critical. Nutritionists emphasize the importance of healthy eating habits at this stressful time. They say the right food and drink can energize your system, improve your alertness and sustain you through the long exam hours. The wrong dietary choices can make you feel sluggish, jittery, or burned out. The following nutrition tips will help you perform at your best on exam day.
1. Make sure to eat Even if you normally skip breakfast or avoid eating when you are nervous, you should still make the time to eat something. Very simply, your brain needs the energy from food to work efficiently. You need to keep your mental focus on your exam and not on your hunger. It would be a shame to study intensively before your exam and then be too fatigued physically to do your best on exam day. If you really cannot stomach food, then try having a protein shake or smoothie.
2. Eat brain-boosting food. This includes protein-rich foods which can lead to greater mental alertness. Healthy food choices on exam day include eggs, nuts, yogurt, and cottage cheese. Good breakfast combinations might be whole-grain cereal with low-fat milk, eggs and toast with jam, porridge, oatmeal, or sugar-free muesli.
Other dietary choices considered to be brain foods are fish, walnuts, blueberries, sunflower seeds, flaxseed, dried fruits, figs, and prunes.
Although unproven, many consider fruit to provide excellent brain fuel, which can help you think faster and remember more easily. You could eat cantaloupes, oranges, strawberries, blueberries, or bananas, which are especially popular.
In terms of vegetables, raw carrots, bell peppers, Brussels sprouts, spinach, broccoli, and asparagus are good choices.
3. Avoid brain blocking foods. On exam day, stay away from foods made of white flour, such as cookies, cakes, and muffins, which require added time and energy to digest. Also avoid foods that are high in refined sugar, such as chocolates, desserts, and candies.
Do not have turkey before an exam as it contains L-tryptophan, an essential amino acid which makes you feel sleepy. Also avoid certain food combinations such as protein and starch together. These substances require added time when they have to be digested together.
When eaten alone, carbohydrates make you feel more relaxed than alert. So carbs are a good option for the day before the exam, but not on the actual exam day. In addition, carbs such as rice or potatoes, eaten in large quantities, can make you feel heavy and sleepy.
Avoid foods that a high in sugar, such as chocolates, desserts, and candies. They will send you off on sugar highs and lows — the opposite of stabilizing you during your long exam.
4. Drink brain boosting beverages. Make sure you drink enough water before and during your exam. Tea also works, though without a lot of sugar. Dehydration can make you lose your concentration, feel faint, and sap your energy. Don’t wait till you’re thirsty to drink a glass of water. If you wait till you’re thirsty, it means your body is already a little dehydrated.
5. Avoid brain blocking beverages. Avoid alcohol completely on exam day. Obviously, you cannot do well on an exam if you are drunk, have a headache, or are feeling nauseous. In general, reduce your drinking around exam time to avoid hangovers, dullness, or excessive fatigue.
Avoid sugary sodas and colas. Avoid caffeine, as it can increase your nervousness. However, if you are accustomed to drinking coffee regularly, then have a small cup or two. Try to eat something healthy along with your coffee. If you cut out the coffee suddenly and completely, you could end up with a caffeine-withdrawal headache.
6. Eat light meals. Eat enough to feel satisfied but not so much as to feel full. If you eat a big breakfast or lunch before an exam, you will feel drowsy and heavy. Your body’s energy will be focused on the digestive process rather than on providing your brain with the energy it needs to function efficiently. Instead, try a light lunch such as a salad with chicken or salmon.
7. Don’t try any new foods, drinks, or supplements just before the exam, even if they come highly recommended by friends or family. You don’t know how your body responds to them and you don’t want any surprises on exam day. Stick with food and drink your body is accustomed to.
8. Consider taking multivitamins. Most students do not eat a healthy balanced diet. When you survive on pizza, junk food, Red Bull, and coffee, your body ends up with a lack of essential vitamins and minerals. A multivitamin can help. The B vitamins especially strengthen brain functioning. Iron, calcium, and zinc can boost your body’s ability to handle stress.
9. Snack intelligently. In some countries, you are given a five- to ten-minute break in the middle of a long exam. Carry healthy snacks, such as protein bars, trail mix, energy bars, granola bars, almonds, walnuts, or fruit for such times, to keep your energy high. Avoid chocolates or sweet treats as the energy high could be followed by an energy crash during your exam!
10. Get enough sleep. Many students get into the habit of studying late into the night, hoping to cram in a little more information into their already exhausted brains. Instead, on the night before the exam, stop studying in the early evening. After that, take it easy, eat your dinner, lay out your clothes for the next day, pack your bag, take a shower, set a couple of alarms and head to bed early. You’ve done all you can. To function at your best on exam day, you need not only the energy that comes from healthy nutrition, but also the energy that comes from adequate, restful sleep.
