- Lions are very social compared to other cats species, often living in prides that feature female, offsprings and a few adult males
- Male lions are easy to recognize thanks to their distinctive manes. Males with darker manes are more likely to attract female lion
- Lions are the National animal of Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, England, Ethiopia, Luxembourg, Netherlands and Singapore
- Lions in the wild live for around 12 years
- When lion breed with Tigers the resulting hybrids are known as ligers and tigons. There are also lion and Leopard known as leopons and lion and jaguar hybrids known as Jaglions.
- Lioness especially are better hunters than males and do most of the hunting for a pride
- In the wild lions rest for around 20 hours a day.
- Lionesses are caring mothers who will even take care of a neglected cub, allowing him/her to suckle and giving them a chance to survive. Two or more lionesses in a group tend to give birth around the same time, and the cubs are raised together. Cubs are extremely playful.
- Lions communicate through a range of behaviours and their expressive movements are very highly developed. They will perform peaceful tactile actions such as licking each other and rubbing heads. Head rubbing, or nuzzling, is a common greeting behaviour for lions. They also communicate through a variety of vocalisations including purrs, snarls, miaws and hissing. Their vocalisations also vary in intensity and pitch.
