If you’re confident in what you’re doing, you’ll get the respect you deserve by looking the part too. 

What that means is presenting yourself in a professional light. It may seem slightly superficial, but image plays a big part in getting ahead in a professional sense.

Having said that, don’t forget to sing your own praises at the right times too.

If this seems at odds with the first point, it really isn’t. It’s more about signaling intentions through subtle means, such as a chat with a boss about how you’re interested in taking a step up. This will imply that you are confident without coming across as overbearing.

This is quite a simple idea in principle; all you have to do is deliver more than you promise.

If you are able to spin it so that you’re always delivering above expectation, that’s a pretty good place to start for getting a promotion.
