Students
The Difference Between A 100level Student & A 300level student
Contrary
to popular belief, being a student is hard work. Here are a few
scenarios that show how different student life becomes as you get older.
First year is the full of fun year that includes everything to do with
drinking, partying and getting laid. As we get older and become more
settled and serious about our futures the whole scope of university life
changes. So third year is that serious year, indeed to impress future
employers or maybe get into Post-graduate Degrees. Let's see how life
changes from 1st to 3rd year.
Missing tutorials
In
first year we have no interest in being in tutorials especially if our
friends are not with us. You would much rather be chilling on the lawns
or with your friends talking endlessly about crap. So when you finally
do have to attend a tutorial, you roll your eyes at the tutor and think
to yourself “Just chill, it’s just a tut, sign me the hell in” Right? As
third year tutorials approach, that’s if you unlucky enough to have
any, you feel so ashamed of yourself if you miss a tut, and having to
explain your absence to a tutor who is usually your lecturer you
actually feel the shame wash over you. But mostly you become that
student that just won’t leave your tutor alone!
Taking notes in Lectures
In
first year you come late and then all you do during the lecture is draw
doodles on your page or abuse the Wi-Fi on your notebook or iPad. But
mostly you fall asleep in most of your classes and wake up towards the
end of the lecture and thinking “Is this guy STILL talking?!” or “Damn I
hope that cutie didn’t see me drooling!” But Third year is a completely
different experience, you come super early, and obviously your
classmates are there too, you prepare several pens, incase the many
others run dry, neatly take out several highlighters as well as a
notebook and exam-pad. And then carry on to wait patiently for your
lecturer, when they walk in you are on first name basis and take notes
from the time your lecturer says “hello guys, today we will be
discussing…” You also bring along your iPad or notepad just in case you
need to google anything so you can prepare your questions to ask at the
very end of the lecture when everyone is gone. Talk about working
overtime.
Writing an essay
In
first year you mostly wait until the very last minute to write that
essay. When the lecturer tells you a month in advance that you cannot
possibly do this essay a night before it is due because you will fail,
most first years have a pop-up in their mind saying “Challenge
accepted”. Third year is completely different, when a lecturer tells you
about an essay, from that day until you get it back marked and graded
you will be stressed out. Every day you try and do a little bit for an
essay and it’s completed in a week and the next week you start from
scratch again. That’s just how it is, I have no idea why. But if you are
a third year, you will understand.
Going out
We
all know how this changes. I doubt I need to explain it but here goes.
First year your schedule is thus: Wake up hung-over, attend lectures,
sleep during your lectures, guzzle down redbull at lunch time, go to the
computer labs sit and watch Facebook videos, mostly music videos and
fail compilations, text all your friends to make plans for the night, go
out and get smashed. Wake up hung-over, repeat. In third year however,
work consumes your entire life. You have a family vacation? Take your
work. Need the toilet? Sit and read articles. Breakfast? Chowing
coursework. Family bonding? Getting your family to help you to edit
assignments. It’s rough in third year, so enjoy as much of campus life
as you can in second and first year!
